Marine Oil François Pierre Barry 19th Century Port Boats Marseille Benezit Guidin Provence Sailing Ships
Artist: Francois Pierre Barry
Oil on heavy cardboard, circa 1850, by François Pierre Barry. This painter, specializing in the depiction of port scenes, as is the case with this painting, was born in Marseille in 1813. Before becoming a painter, he was a hairdresser, then he entered the Marseille School of Drawing, directed by Augustin Aubert. He then went to Paris in 1840 where he studied under Théodore Gudin, a marine painter, and later under Eugène Isabey. He won a third-class medal at the 1840 Salon for two seascapes. In 1843, he was elected to the Academy of Marseille. He traveled to Egypt in 1862 to visit the construction of the Swedish Canal with Prince Napoleon Jérôme Bonaparte and Ferdinand de Leseps. He spent his final years in Saint-Laurent-du-Var, where he painted Provençal landscapes. He died in 1905. He is listed in the Benezit Dictionary of Artists. His works are exhibited in several museums worldwide: New York, Algiers, the Louvre Museum in France, the museums in Tarbes and Versailles, and of course, the Museum of Fine Arts in Marseille at the Palais Longchamps. This painting is in its original condition, as you can see in the photos. It is presented in its original stuccoed giltwood frame, which has some missing pieces and needs restoration. The varnish has yellowed slightly over the years (almost 200 years), and a light cleaning would restore the original, more vibrant colors. Dimensions with frame: 39.50 cm x 31.50 cm. Dimensions of the cardboard box without the frame: 25.50 cm x 17.50 cm. Shipping within France via Colissimo registered mail with insurance and excellent packaging: €25.
