The precise and delicate workmanship, the subtle transitions in the shape of the face and the diffused light that illuminates the complexion are reminiscent of the intimate style of Louis-Léopold Boilly and his entourage. We find in this painting the taste for a bourgeois portrait of the Consulate and the First Empire, imbued with realism and psychological finesse.
The care taken in rendering textures, the dull fabric of the frock coat, the whiteness of the linen, the rosy skin, testify to a skilled hand, probably that of a painter trained in the French neo-classical movement. The ensemble, of sober and harmonious composition, perfectly illustrates the discreet elegance and sensitivity of the French portrait at the turn of the 19th century.
We can date this work around 1800-1810, by the fashion of the model, characteristic of the Consulate.
The work is in very good condition, a small retouch very well executed is to be reported.
It is sold with a frame to be restored from the Empire era, decorated with pearls and palmettes.
