Pair Of Paintings Venice Italy Joseph Saint Germier Impressionist Toulouse Bayonne Basque
Artist: Joseph Saint Germier
Two oils on panel by Toulousain painter Joseph Saint-Germier.
This artist was born in Toulouse in 1860 and died in 1925 in Bayonne in the Basque country.
This talented painter with a highly recognizable steamy technique mainly painted Venice, with which he had fallen in love.
He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Alexandre Cabanel, then after Cabanel's death in the studio of Léon Bonnat, who became his friend.
In 1888, he participated for the first time in the Paris Salon with the painting "La Navaja", purchased by the State in 1889 and exhibited in the Bayonne museum.
The same year, he obtained a travel grant and traveled to Italy, Spain and Morocco.
In 1891, he exhibited "Une loge au bal masqué de Venise" at the annual Berlin Salon, which was a huge success in Germany and was distributed through woodcuts.
The original painting was sold in 1998 at Sotheby's, estimated at $15,000.
Joseph Saint-Germier was made a knight of the Legion of Honor in 1897, then an officer in 1912.
In 1900, at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, he won the gold medal with the painting "enterrement à Venise" purchased by the French government, now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
He became an honorary member of the Société des amis des Arts de Bayonne-Biarritz.
Between May and June 1918, he exhibited at the Petit Palais in Paris alongside Puvis de Chavannes, Edgar Degas, Auguste Rodin etc...
As with these two paintings, he loved to depict views of Venice in its distinctive light, with the reflections of water on the canals and the changing shades of color on the facades according to the time of day.
This painter is featured in BENEZIT and Gérald Schurr's book "Les Petits Maîtres de la Peinture valeur de demain".
His paintings are on display in several museums, including the Musée d'Orsay, the Musée du Luxembourg and the Musée des Tuilleries in Paris, as well as Bayonne, Montpellier etc..
The paintings are "in their original state". The varnish has yellowed a little, a light cleaning would bring out the more vivid original colors.
Note one or 2 small scratches, nothing serious.
The gilded wood frames are recent, one of them has a small lack of stucco in a lower left corner.
These two paintings are both signed and one of them bears an old label on the back where I can guess written in pen: "à Lyne en souvenir du 1er voyage à Venise" and a date that I can't manage to read.
Size with frame: 57 cm x 50 cm.
Size on view: 40 cm x 32 cm.
