French Masonic Sword With Military Blade
This Masonic sword is French and dates from the 19thcentury. Its distinctive feature is that it is fitted with a real military blade and not, like so many others, a purely fancy blade.
BLADE : This is, according to its general shapea blade made at the Klingenthal factory, although it bearsno official marking. It is diamond-shaped in cross-section, with two fullers on each side of the first half of the blade. It is very similar in shape to the blades mounted on gendarmerie swords. Traces of oxidation visible on the photos.
Blade length = 79.5 cm, width at shoulder= 2.5 cm thickness at shoulder, 6.3 mm
GARDE ; made of brass, with two straight quillons which end in a 3 lobes form . Compass and square on one side, mallet and trowel on the other. In the center of thecross guard: a 5branches shining star.
There is a very small old repair by weldingh at a a barely visible crack. I have increased the contrast on the photo to highlight this old repair, which is almost invisible.
POMMEAU: in three-lobed brass, with square and compass in the center of a radiant triangle or luminous Delta, and on the the other side , an empty luminous delta.
FUSEE made of black horn, probably bull horn.bull horn. A brass ferrule makes the junction with the cruise.
Interesting sword, for its blade, which is a real blade and not just a decorative accessory. It is possible that this object was related to a military lodge in the 19th century.
