Charles De Steuben (1788-1856) -portrait Of A Parisian Bourgeois Interior
Superb oil on canvas depicting a richly decorated bourgeois interior. A young woman sits on a red upholstered sofa, dressed in an elegant pearl-gray satin gown. Beside her, a child (presumably her daughter) cuddles tenderly.
To the right, an ornate textile-covered table hosts a bouquet of flowers, while a painting hanging on the wall in the background reinforces the cultured, refined character of this interior.
Charles de Steuben established himself in the 1820s-1840s as a portrait painter sought after by the Parisian aristocracy and haute bourgeoisie. In particular, he produced the portrait of Madame la Comtesse de Béthisy (1833, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lille) and that of the Countess Dash (1844, Hermitage Museum).
Installed between 1822 and 1843 at 30 rue Hautefeuille in Paris, he produced numerous portraits of high society. The present painting, dated 1838, fully illustrates this context and bears witness to an elegant Parisian interior, reflecting the taste and social status of its commissioners.
Important carved and gilded wood frame with rocaille decoration, 19th-century work (probably later than the painting).
