Auguste Delacroix - Young Fishermen - Oil On Canvas
Oil on canvas depicting a scene of fishermen on the coast, signed lower left
"A. Delacroix".
The composition features a young sailor standing, dressed in a broad straw hat, dark jacket and striped stockings, accompanied by a seated young woman wearing the traditional headdress of the northern coasts. At their feet are various fishing accessories - basket, jug and catch of the day - while in the background a seascape animated by soft, vaporous light can be discerned.
The work bears witness to Auguste Delacroix's taste for popular genre scenes and maritime subjects inspired by everyday life on the Boulonnais coast. The warm palette, dominated by ochres, reds and browns, as well as the picturesque treatment of costumes, recall the French Romantic tradition of the mid-19th century.
The reverse bears the canvas dealer's stamp "Jeanbin, breveté vendeur" and the canvas is mounted on its antique stretcher.
Dimensions: 32.5 × 41 cm.
