Taureaux Et Héros
Here's another ceramic by French ceramist Claude Agier Mollinari.
It's part of a series of works based on ancient alphabets. Made by applying an ancient cylinder seal, this print reproduces the original representations identically. The seal belongs to a private collector.
It was entrusted to the artist as part of his research and in view of Claude's obvious interest in cuneiform scripts.
The seal from the AKKAD period (2350-2200 BC):
Two scenes: two bulls with human faces, erect, back to back and connected by two small horizontal lines. Between them, a vertical stick. Two naked, bearded heroes grasp their front legs. One of the heroes turns his head towards the next scene.
A human-faced bull wrestles with a lion drawn up in front of him, mouth open, tail raised.
Writings: reproduction of a royal Sumerian inscription, on brick, by the Isin king Isme-Dagan (1953-1935 BC).
British Museum.
The artist works from original sources and authentic tools, giving this work a dimension that is at once scholarly, archaeological and conceptual. These engraved signs testify to her approach to the transmission and contemporary reinterpretation of ancient knowledge through ceramics.
The outer surface features a texture that is deliberately smooth for the sand color and grainy for the glazed edges.
