Shepherd's Cup In Carved Corozo Nut, Folk Art, 16th Century
Rare and interesting shepherd's cup made of finely carved corozo nut in the round.
The object features a particularly rich and narrative decoration composed of attributes related to pastoral and rural life: instruments (probably bagpipes), gourd, books, tools, as well as various symbolic and decorative motifs. A radiating rosette adorned with a cross structures one of the faces, adding a further symbolic dimension.
The workmanship, highly meticulous despite the small scale, evokes a folk art of itinerant tradition, possibly linked to convict work or journeyman production, as is sometimes encountered on this type of corozo piece.
The patina is old and even. We note a crack on the upper part, as well as an old reinforcement, probably original, testifying to the use and age of the object.
An unusual piece, both ethnographic and decorative, sought after for the quality of its carving and the richness of its iconography.
The patina is old and homogeneous.
