Pair Of Japanese Bronze Incense Burners With Fô Dog Decor, Meiji Period, Late 19th Century

Pair of bronze Japanese incense burners with Fô dog decoration from the Meiji period, late 19th century

Emerging from the period when Japan opened up to the Western world, this pair of bronze incense burners with Japonisant decoration comes from the Meiji era (1868-1912), at the end of the 19th century.

Europe, ever more voracious for elements of Japanese culture, demanded its Bronze craftsmanship. Feng Shui and perfume cultures arrived in Europe.

This pair of Bronze perfume burners soon found their way into the most refined and chic French interiors of the late 19th century. Both useful and decorative, they sport a Japanese look with their Chien de Fô-headed feet and planter-like shape, and are still functional today. Still just as functional today.
