Pitcher Signed By Jean Marais, Made Of Chamotte Stoneware With A Vintage, Unglazed Finish From The 1970s
Artist: Jean Marais
Jean Marais-signed pitcher made of chamotte stoneware with a vintage, unglazed finish from the 1970s
Created in the 1970s, this stoneware pitcher with a black chamotte glaze is a creation by the artist Jean Marais (1913–1998), who was originally known as a legendary actor in French cinema, appearing in films such as *Beauty and the Beast* and *Donkey Skin*. He later decided to pursue a career in ceramics, a career influenced by Jean Cocteau and his stays in Vallauris.
Although passionate and self-taught, it was the Vallauris-based ceramicist couple Jo and Nini Pasquali who taught him the basics, such as throwing pottery, as well as firing and glazing techniques.
Jean Marais’s creations stand out for their astonishing surrealism and the unique worldview of the actor-turned-ceramist, contributing to the revival of modern folk art in Vallauris!
