Originating from the ethnic craftsmanship of Niger, this ancient granite sculpture represents an ancestor, likely male. The purpose of this monolith was to be placed near rivers or villages.
Its ovoid shape served as a boundary marker, or simply as a tribute to deceased tribal/spiritual leaders. This tradition originated with the tribes of Cross River State in Niger, although it has spread and is still practiced today.
Now a collector's item, traces of earth can still be seen where it was buried.
