Monolithic Anthropomorphic River Sculpture In Sahel Granite In Niger
Monolithic Sculpture of anthropomorphic river in granite from the Sahel to Niger
Resulting from the ethnic craftsmanship of Niger, this artisanal granite sculpture is ancient. It represents an ancestor, probably masculine.
The purpose of this monolith was to be planted near rivers or villages. Its ovoid shape serving as a milestone, or simply as a tribute to the deceased tribal/spiritual leaders.
This tradition originates from the tribes of the state of Cross River in Niger, even if the tradition has spread and is still practiced today. Today, as an object of collection, one can still see the traces of 'earth' where it was buried.
