Tribal Art - Hopi Kachina Arizona Doll
French collection.
The Katsinam sculpted objects (singular Kachina), witnesses to the traditions of the Hopi Indian peoples of Arizona, come alive during the traditional dances which accompany the annual rain festivals. Decorated with superb colored areas, the wooden Kachina dolls, true works of art, serve as educational tools for the Pueblo Native American group (including the Hopi, Zuni, Tewa Village, Acoma Pueblo and Laguna Pueblo) and are offered to children at the end of ritual festivals. These statuettes, embodying a wide variety of spirits, represent Kachina dancers, with colors symbolizing the cardinal points.
