Life of Pierre Caprais Tournié
Born in Agen in 1795, Pierre Tournié grew up in a familypoor but deeply Christian working-class family. His childhood was markedby the French Revolution; he was secretly baptized by a proscribed priesta scene that would engrave in him an unshakeable faith. Fatherlessraised by his mother and grandmother with absolute respect for religion.religion. After a rough start at school with a master weaver, he entered thein 1808, where he proved to be a model pupil,with a keen intelligence and great piety.At the age of twenty, he began teaching at M. Boë'scollege in Agen, where he re-established discipline by example alone.Noticing his talent, his teacher sent him to Paris to perfect his studies.Nicknamed "the little monk of the Sorbonne", he rubbed shoulders with some of the greatestsuch as M. Gail and M. Burnouf, with whom he collaborated on editions ofeditions of Greek classics. His phenomenal memory, in particular his ability torecite the Iliad by heart, made him a star in his examinations.Despite the prospects of fame in Paris, he chose to return toreturn to Agen out of gratitude to M. Boë. It was then that his religiousreligious vocation. This choice leads to a heart-rending scene withMr. Boë, who had hoped to make him his successor, but Mr. Tournié remained firm: "God is calling me!God is calling me! He entered the Petit-Séminaire in 1830 and was ordained a priestshortly afterwards.As a teacher, he taught the sciences(botany, mineralogy) and archaeology with a simple, practical method,He even set up a natural history cabinet. In 1849, despite his greatmodesty and initial reluctance, he was appointed Superior of thePetit-Séminaire d'Agen. During his twelve years in charge, he : modernized discipline, emphasizing a sense of duty rather than fear. Rejuvenated the buildings, creating gardens and opening up the institution for the well-being of students. Remains a respected friend and advisor to his colleagues.Stricken by infirmities resulting from his hard work, he retiredprematurely from his position as superior. He spends his last yearsin the seminary, a consultant revered for his science and benevolence. He passes awaypeacefully, resigned and ready for heaven, on the feast day of his firstcommunion. Sources describe him above all as a "man of duty",remained true to his principles through the many changes of political regimesregimes of his century.
