Edouard Detaille - Cavalier Du Second Hussard - Watercolor - Monogrammed - About 1890

Artist: Detaille Edouard (1848 – 1912, France)
Edouard DETAILLE (1848 - 1912)
Cavalier du Second Hussard (recto) + Dragon (verso)
Watercolor
Monogrammed lower right "ED"
8.3 cm x 11, 3 cm. With frame: 18 cm x 21 cm
Very good condition (recto)

Charming and rare original watercolor by Édouard Detaille, depicting a soldier in Second Empire dress, accompanied by his horse laden with equipment. The work perfectly illustrates the documentary precision and attention to detail for which the artist, the undisputed master of 19th-century French military painting, was renowned.

Detaille treated this subject on several occasions, and this work was subsequently widely reproduced. This is an original watercolor.

The finely-worked figure wears a richly-described uniform, while the horse and its harness bear witness to careful, lively observation. The whole is executed with great delicacy of touch and a subtle palette.

A second original drawing, also in Detaille's hand, depicting another full-length soldier, was discovered on the reverse when the work was framed. This type of double composition, often derived from studies or studio sheets, reinforces the interest and authenticity of the work.

The work is monogrammed "ED" in the lower right-hand corner. It is presented in an antique gilded wooden frame (probably period or slightly later), which enhances the intimate and precious character of the composition.

We enclose a framed graphite drawing of an Empire soldier. This drawing is unsigned, but may in the past have been attributed to Detaille.
Dimensions of this drawing: 14 cm x 12 cm sight, 23 cm x 19 cm with frame.

The artist
Édouard Detaille (1848-1912) was one of the greatest French military painters of the 19th century. A pupil of Ernest Meissonier, he made a name for himself early on with his precise drawing and keen sense of historical documentation.

Marked by his involvement in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, he developed a body of work deeply rooted in direct observation of military life. His paintings rigorously retrace Napoleonic campaigns, soldiers' lives and maneuver scenes, combining accurate uniforms and a sense of narrative.

Detaille also contributed to major illustrated works, notably L'Armée française, helping to fix the military imagination of his time. A member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, he enjoyed immense success during his lifetime.

Today, his works are preserved in major institutions, notably the Musée de l'Armée, and remain highly sought-after by collectors of military art.
