Saint Stephen, The First Martyr, 18th Century French School, Polychrome Gilded Wood
Saint Étienne, the first martyr, in polychrome wood, formerly gilded with leaf, 18th century French school. Recognizable by its red veil relating to the martyr and the stoning stones present in his left hand. Old traces of woodworm do not call into question the solidity of this holy sculpture.
Stephen is a 1st-century Jewish preacher who appears in the Acts of the Apostles (Ac), the work of Luke the Evangelist. Like Philip the Deacon, Stephen is introduced, at the beginning of chapter 6 of Acts, in the episode known as the Institution of the Seven (Acts 6 1-7). Stephen and Philip are the two main characters of the following three chapters. Stephen is known as "Stephen the Protomartyr", "Stephen the Protomartyr" or "Stephen the Protomartyr", because he is regarded by Christians as the first martyr. He is also one of the seventy disciples chosen by Jesus Christ.
