Above, a band with the inscription "Her ich las dich nicht, du segnest dan mich", after the religious cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach "Ich lasse dich nicht, du segnest mich denn" (I will not let you go, until you have blessed me) composed in Leupzig in 1727 and sung for the funeral of the chamberlain and councilor of the Saxon court Johann Christoph von Ponickau in Pomßen, about twenty kilometers from Leipzig. The work was performed again for the Feast of the Purification on 6 February 1728.
This piece of carved wood is most likely a tribute to the chamberlain and councillor of the Saxon court Johann Christoph von Ponickau.
Johann Christoph von Ponickau (21 March 1652 - 31 October 1726 in Pomssen) was a councillor of the Polish and Saxon royal court, chamberlain and captain of the collegiate church of Wurzen. He owned numerous estates, including the castle and manor of Pomssen near Leipzig. On 6 February 1727, a memorial service for Johann Christoph von Ponickau took place in the church of Pomssen, for which Johann Sebastian Bach wrote the cantata Ich lasse dich nicht, du segnest mich denn (BWV 157), the text of which the deceased had previously chosen. Ponickau was married to Elisabeth Eléonore Bernstein. A daughter, Johanne Eléonore Caroline, married the fallen Grand Marshal Friedrich Carl von Poellnitz on December 14, 1727 in Altenburg.
