Carved Wood Cerulean Angel - 18th Century
Elegant linden wood carving of a cerulean angel, 18th century work, displaying a fine quality of carving and an assertive decorative presence.
The angel is depicted standing, in a graceful, slightly swaying attitude characteristic of late Baroque aesthetics. He holds a candle holder in his right hand, emphasizing his liturgical function as a bearer of light. The overall movement of the figure, accentuated by the interplay of drapery, lends the ensemble great vivacity.
The face, with its soft, expressive modeling, is framed by abundant hair with deeply sculpted curls. The treatment of the fabrics, ample and rhythmic, testifies to real craftsmanship, with beautiful effects of relief and depth.
There are traces of a former polychromy that has now faded, giving way to a dark, warm patina. The sculpture shows some missing parts and wear, notably on the left hand, consistent with its age.
The set rests on a sculpted plinth, mounted on a later stone base, adding to its decorative character.
