Shipwreck Scene, Gouache On Paper, Late 16th Century, In The Style Of Horace Vernet

Artist: Dans L’esprit De Vernet,

Interesting gouache on paper depicting a shipwreck scene in the middle of a storm, animated by numerous characters and treated in a dramatic spirit typical of emerging Romantic painting.

The composition is organized around a lighthouse standing in the center, illuminated by a tormented sky streaked with lightning. To the left, a ship struggles against the waves while a boat tries to escape the swell. On the right, a broken wreck smashes against the rocks. In the foreground, several figures rescue a castaway, bringing a pathetic, narrative dimension to the scene.

The treatment of light, the intensity of the sky and the staging of the maritime drama evoke the work of marine painters in the taste of Horace Vernet, although the work is probably part of a studio or inspiration production.

Gouache technique on paper, with tones still fresh despite some weathering. Presented in its antique molded wooden frame.
