Beautiful terracotta bust of a mischievous, smiling faun.
Very fine terracotta from the second half of the 19th century, signed on the back by Vallmitjana for Venanci Vallmitjana y Barnaby ( 1828-1919).
This large bust of a mischievous, expressive faun is shown turned slightly three-quarter, and rests on a fine terracotta pedestal.
the faun's face is very nicely treated with numerous details, particular care has been taken with this terracotta.
he wears a large smile, his eyes are very expressive, he is topped with a crown of grapes and vine pompons.
his pointed ears stand out from his hair and beard, which blend with his hairy torso.
he looks like he's just come out of a bacchanal and has a lecherous side.
the many details are very finely treated and despite his age he's in very good condition.
the original patina of the terracotta is very beautiful and enhances these many details.
Venanci Vallmitjana was a well-known sculptor in Barcelona, Spain, in the 19th century.
