ALEXIS GRIMOU IS A FRENCH ARTIST BORN IN ARGENTEUIL IN 1678-1733.
HE WAS A PUPIL OF FRANÇOIS DE TROY FROM WHOM HE BORROWED HIS TASTE FOR CHARACTERS IN FANTASY COSTUME
. IN 1704, HE MARIE-GABRIELLE PETIT, NIECE OF PROCOPIO CUTO, FOUNDER OF THE FAMOUS CAFE PROCOPE.
HE DID NOT ENTER THE ACADEMY OF PAINTING ALTHOUGH HE WAS APPROVED BUT TURNED TOWARDS THE ACADEMY OF SAINT LUC.
In 1709, he visited Holland to study and copy the great masters and under the influence of Rembrandt, who greatly influenced him, he changed his color palette.
Alexis Grimou was commonly called "the French Rembrandt" during his lifetime. He enjoyed great success in his time despite a very agitated private life.
The portrait is presented in a gilded wooden frame.
