Elegant Italian chess board from the second half of the 19th century, Napoleon III period, entirely composed of a remarkable assemblage of polychrome marble and hardstone samples.
Each square features a different variety of marble or decorative stone, transforming this chessboard into a veritable marmothèque - or lithothèque - with a decorative as well as a scientific and ornamental vocation.
The set is mounted on a slate top with black marble frame.
Very beautiful decorative effect, in the manner of an abstract painting of natural stones, with a particularly bright and varied palette: malachite, breccias, red, yellow, green, blue and black marbles.
