Achille Blot – A Notable Pair Of Breton Peasant Figures In Desvres Earthenware, Circa 1900–1905

An important pair of Breton peasant figures in polychrome earthenware, made in Desvres by Achille Blot in the early 20th century, circa 1900–1905.

These two large, sculptural pieces depict a man and a woman dressed in traditional Breton costumes. The man, standing in a pose full of character, wears the regional costume, while the woman is depicted bent under the weight of an imposing bundle of firewood.

The particularly expressive modeling, the precision of the clothing, and the naturalistic rendering of the faces attest to the quality of these pieces from the Desvres factory. The rich, glossy, and nuanced polychrome glaze beautifully catches the light and gives the entire piece the deep, luminous appearance of enamel.

The two figures rest on undulating pedestals evoking the ground. Signature on the terrace and incised marks beneath the bases.
