Fernand Lantoine was a painter and illustrator from northern France. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he frequented Paul Signac, he settled in Uccle, near Brussels, and exhibited with the avant-garde groups Le Sillonand La Libre Esthétique. His style evolved from pointillist neo-impressionism to a more structured and refined style of painting, influenced by his many travels.
Appointed official painter of the Navy in 1922, Fernand Lantoine travelled the globe. He sailed the Mediterranean and North Africa and explored distant regions such as the Belgian Congo, the Arctic, Madagascar and Oceania. His painting thus became a sensitive testimony to a distant, exotic and unfamiliar world.
