Born in Paris in 1893, son of a master goldsmith and a fashion designer, Léon Renimel grew up in the cultural effervescence of the capital. Trained by Edouard Detaille and Fernand Cormon, he devoted himself entirely to painting from the age of 19 and adopted his pseudonym Reni-Mel. Mobilized in 1915, he drew and painted between battles, a moving testimony of the living conditions of the Great War. With the return of peace, he quickly became famous with his two monumental paintings: France 1914 and America;

This last achievement earned him a triumphant welcome in America, the land of his dreams, where he settled in 1922. Living in New York until 1934, he traveled throughout the United States, observing the landscapes and the people. Married in 1925 to a young doctoral student from Columbia University, he shared her passion for Native American civilizations, which he would often depict in his paintings. Fascinated by the cultural riches and the surrounding nature, Reni-Mel portrayed a country imbued with diversity, where modernity and primitivism coexist.
