Shirvan Carpet - Caucasus. Circa 1880. 155 X 101 Cm
Sensational and moving, Shirvan rug from Azerbaijan in the Caucasus.
What elegance! The piece is woven and knotted wool on wool. To the eye and touch, you instantly recognize the inimitable texture of ancient Caucasians. The velvet is short. Lightness, finesse, refinement. The piece is light as a cloud, supple, positioned on the ground like a youthful feather.
From a compositional point of view, we observe a very rich and perfectly executed decorative vocabulary.
The deep blue central field shelters a garden.
It is structured by 3 vertical series of large octagonal motifs, each protecting a stylized floral rosette. Symbols of nature, life and fertility cover the entire field, exploding in this liquid-looking indigo blue.
Between the large medallions, sown at regular intervals, appear other small floral motifs and shapes evoking leaves and buds. Again, fertility and life.
To complete the picture, the garden had to be framed by a whole series of protective motifs. These are contained in the main border and in an unbroken line of "S"-shaped motifs, which are in fact protective snakes.
Tones of deep blue, ivory, pistachio green and brick red. All in perfect harmony.
A pure dream, a delicate work filled with stories, culture and ancestral beliefs.
Circa 1880
Very fine condition, borders intact, stopping point at each end.
Dim: 155 x 101 cm
