"ishtar" Box, "ancient Writings" Collection
Artist: Claude Agier Mollinari
"Ishtar" Box, "Ancient Writings" Collection. Some details: The seal used dates from the Old Babylonian period (1925–1595 BC). It is a black hematite seal. It depicts a standing goddess, dressed in a kanakes (a type of traditional garment), wearing a horned tiara, her hair in a bun, raising both hands before her. Facing her stands a warrior king, wearing a short tunic, holding a staff of command in his left hand. The scene is arranged in three-row cartouches, of which only one and a half rows are inscribed. The writing is a partial copy from a toadstool. The piece is catalogued at the Louvre under the number AO 101. It is a dedication to the goddess Ba'u. This object reveals a subtle combination of textures and colors. The lid, reminiscent of wood, evokes a small barrel in both shape and feel. The exquisitely smooth glaze reveals a luminous heart at its center when opened—a signature characteristic of Claude's work. The underside also holds a surprise: when the piece is turned over, a sky blue appears, framing the base and contrasting with a milky white. A particularly pleasant object to hold and contemplate.
