Kilim. Kurdish Baby Carrier. Anatolia. Circa 1900. 70 X 50 X 50 Cm
A rare object belonging to the family of everyday items used by the nomadic populations of Anatolia, more specifically the Kurdish peoples of eastern Turkey. Handwoven wool on wool, the extremely fine and even weave required the object to be robust and secure enough to carry a baby on the back. Women were the ones who used this type of object. Worn in this way, they were free to move as they pleased. The long fringes served two purposes: decorative, of course, but they also helped to warm the small child and sometimes protect them from insects. This object once again demonstrates the ingenuity of this craftsmanship in its functionality. The dyes are exclusively plant-based, deep, dense, saturated, and luminous blue and red. Circa 1900. Dimensions: 70 x 50 x 50 cm. Laurent Beauty of Kilims
