Maffrash Shahsaven. Persia. Early 20th Century. 154 X 105 Cm
Very nice fragment of a Maffrash Shahsaven from Persia.
Originally, Maffrash were the largest carrying bags used by the nomadic populations of Persia and the Caucasus.
Accessorily, they were used as baby carriages once the camp was set up.
Mixed wool-on-wool technique.
Weaving and embroidery ( Sumak )
Extremely fine, refined workmanship, the motifs seem sculpted into the material.
Make no mistake, this Maffrash is in keeping with the excellence of weaving at the time. It is one of the most precious objects in which all the skills of the weavers were illustrated.
