A pupil of Claude Bonnefond at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, Compte-Calix began exhibiting regularly at the Paris Salon from 1850. As early as 1844, the French State acquired a large painting from him illustrating the legend of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, intended for the chapel of the general hospital in Issoire. Also an accomplished portraitist, he gained public recognition through his genre scenes, fashionable subjects, and historical anecdotes. He became particularly known for his depictions of elegant Parisian life and the latest fashions, which he helped disseminate through engravings. He contributed to journals such as Le Musée des Dames, Le Bijou, and Le Journal des Modes, even providing designs for hairstyles, dresses, and hats. Technically impeccable—if occasionally deemed overly charming—his works today offer refined insights into the fashions and lifestyle of Parisian high society under the July Monarchy and the Second Empire.
Although fully capable of rendering natural settings within his compositions, Compte-Calix was not primarily a landscape painter and did not exhibit landscapes at the Salon. This panorama of the Bay of Cannes was therefore likely created for his own pleasure, perhaps during a leisure stay in the region—unless he had retreated to the south to escape the war, as the date of 1870 might suggest.
