"Paul Charles Emmanuel Gallard-lepinay, View Of Venice, Oil On Canvas, 19th Century"
View of the Grand Canal in Venice, with the Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti on the left, as it appeared before the renovations carried out by the architect Camillo Boito starting in 1878, and the Ca' Barbaro seen from the Ponte dell'Accademia. In the distance, the silhouette of Santa Maria della Salute is visible. Two large sailing ships and a gondola add visual interest to the composition. A brilliant light bathes the painting, highlighting the details of the two palaces and the church, whose architecture is faithfully reproduced. The artist thus situates himself within the tradition of 18th-century veduta painters such as Canaletto and Francesco Guardi, while infusing it with 19th-century modernity.
The signature ("Gallard-Lepinay"), difficult to decipher, is located in the lower left corner.
