Antique Khmer Vishnu On Garuda Bronze, Angkor Wat, 12th Century

A fine and evocative antique Khmer bronze depicting the god Vishnu standing upon Garuda, dating to the Angkor Wat period, circa 12th century.

The upper figure represents Vishnu, identifiable by his crown and multiple arms (now worn), standing in a powerful frontal pose. He is supported by Garuda below, the mythical bird-man mount of Vishnu, shown with bent legs, outstretched arms, and a stylised expressive face. The composition—Vishnu astride Garuda—is a classic and important motif in Khmer art, symbolising divine power and protection.

The sculpture displays the characteristic features of Angkor period bronzes: compact proportions, strong symmetry, and expressive modelling. Though small in scale, it possesses a striking presence and clarity of form.

The surface shows an excellent excavated patina, with areas of green oxidation and earthen encrustation consistent with long burial. There is expected wear to the extremities, particularly the hands and attributes, but the overall composition remains clear and well preserved.

A fine example of Khmer devotional art, likely intended for personal or small shrine use.
