Model 1874 Troop Helmet Of The 13th Dragoon Regiment, Dated 1880, French Cavalry, Ww1
A fine Model 1874 enlisted man's helmet from the 13th Dragoon Regiment, dated 1880. This type of helmet was worn until the beginning of the First World War.
In very good condition, it is entirely original.
The shell, visor, and neck guard are made of nickel-plated steel. The back of the shell is marked:
1/ "13D" for the 13th Dragoon Regiment.
2/ "80" for the year of manufacture, 1880.
3/ "58" for the head size.
4/ "1244" and "131", the service numbers of the dragoons who wore this helmet.
The crest and headband are made of brass. The headband is decorated on the front with a flaming grenade and laurel leaves. The crest features a Medusa head mask at the top. Its sides are decorated with gadroons, palmettes, and water leaves.
The chin straps are made of brass decorated with stylized scales and rosettes. They are mounted on leather chin straps that fasten with a single-pronged buckle.
The inner lining is made of black leather. The inside of the visor is painted green, and the neck guard is lined with leather. Minor wear to the lining.
Original black horsehair mane approximately 65 cm long.
Brass plume holder. The helmet is sold with its period scarlet feather plume (the olive is missing).
