Pair Of Ibeji, Yoruba People, Nigeria
A pair of statuettes representing dizygotic twins (fraternal twins). They are very similar, distinguished only by their sexual attributes. The nose and mouth protrude the face. The hairstyles are very elaborate: a large conical bun is surrounded by four smaller triangular buns. A triangular motif adorns the chests of both statuettes. Necklaces of small red beads embellish the figures' necks. The female statuette also wears a red beaded belt.
Their hairstyle may link them to the Shaki type (a sub-tribe of the Yoruba).
Note the atypical size of these Ibeji. They are indeed smaller than average, making this a very original pair.
Wood with a patina from use, beads.
Height: 12.5 cm.
Yoruba people, Nigeria.
First half of the 20th century.
