Object description :

" Ceremonial Axe, Luguru People, Tanzania"
A beautiful ceremonial axe surmounted by an ancestral head. The face is quite lifelike and is enhanced with tin studs forming earrings. The forged iron blade has a flattened tip, while the other end curves to a point that extends above the height of the head. This gives the whole piece a light, almost ethereal quality. The figure appears to be dancing.
The wood has a heavy patina from use, with cracks, and the iron is present.
