Rare pewter wine bottle in the shape of a bell, known as a "Glockenkanne," with a bayonet-lock lid surmounted by a wide, fixed vertical ring and a tubular spout with a hinged flap. It is engraved with an allegorical scene from the life of William Tell and the coats of arms of Nidwald, Schwyz, and Uri.
Hallmark of Caspar Traber, active from 1683 to 1714.
Foundry countermark on the inside depicting the Crucifixion.
Height: 26.7 cm.
Lucerne (Lucerne), circa 1700.
In perfect condition with a beautiful, lustrous central patina.
Bibliography: "Die Zinngiesser der Schweiz und ihre Marken" by Schneider and Kneuss, which reproduces this hallmark.
William Tell is one of the heroes of the founding myths of Switzerland. He is said to have lived in the canton of Uri at the beginning of the 14th century and to have rebelled against the Austrian bailiff who had challenged him to shoot a crossbow bolt at an apple placed on his son's head.
