TOULOUSE, First third of the 18th c
Absolutely superb and rare type III model featuring a type II handle variant (§ René Richard: "Potiers d'étain de l'ancien Languedoc et du Roussillon".
This is one of the finest French productions of this type of object, perfectly representative of the ewer typology that appeared in the second half of the 17th century, and was also adopted by goldsmiths, earthenware makers and glassmakers.
Precision on hallmarking:
In Toulouse, as in many cities throughout the Kingdom, Louis XIV's edict introducing the control hallmark in 1691 was not strictly observed, and only the 1691 and 1709 vintages are known for this center. The latter was used for many years without being updated, making it impossible to accurately date the objects bearing it.
