****************

Pewter pitcher with shoulder, flared foot, straight, slanted bowl, and tasseled thumb rest.
Incompletely legible control mark: Crowned C / 172(-) / (V)ITRE. (This is the 1729 mark, the last recorded date, which was used until the Revolutionary period.)
Incompletely applied mark of Pierre RAOULT, received as a master around 1750: Saint Peter / rooster / 1777 / (PIERRE RAOULT A VITRAY). The last photograph shows this more legible mark previously recorded on another piece.
Height: 27.9 cm.
VITRE (Brittany), Late 18th century.

Extremely rare provenance in very fine, fresh condition and superb quality of material; Sixth example found during nearly 50 years of intensive study of pewterware... A museum piece!
This type is found in centers of eastern Brittany such as Saint-Malo, Rennes, etc., and is similar to the Lower Normandy production of type I, known as "shouldered" tin, although the body of Breton jugs is slightly truncated conical and wider. Ownership mark engraved on the handle: CI / CHA / CI / ROYER.

Paradoxically, while Brittany had tin mines, the tin industry was very limited in its eastern part and virtually nonexistent in the rest of the region.
