Pewter ewer (called Stegkanne) in baluster shape with a long, bridged spout and hinged lid, a scrolled lid with a top motif, and a molded palmette thumb rest. It is engraved with a floral motif and the following commemorative inscriptions: LAND SEKEL MEISTER / PETER KOLI 1736.
Marks :
1° - Control mark with a crowned F.
2° - Mark of Abraham GANTIG, received as a master in Bern in 1743.
3° - "Arquebus" mark, attesting to the award given to the winner of a shooting competition.
Height: 31.8 cm.
BERN, mid-18th century.
Very good condition with a beautiful natural patina.
Bibliography: "Die Zinngiesser der Schweiz und ihre Marken" by Schneider and Kneuss, which reproduce these hallmarks.
This typology, clearly inspired by medieval art, is often found later in the still lifes of Dutch painters in the 17th and 18th centuries.
