Pewter PITCHER with a flared base, straight oblique cup and acorn thumb.
Mark of Nicolas PREAUX received as master in 1744: serpent bird / N.PREAVX / 17(51).
Stamped property mark overlapping the master's mark : ALM
Gauging mark: lis / PL,
Height: 15.4 cm.
LISIEUX, Second half of the 18th century


Interesting mark of an itinerant gauger-controller already noted in L'AIGLE. Let us recall in passing that these pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime. The capacity of those used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., had to be periodically checked by the royal or ecclesiastical power to ensure "good measure" for the consumer, but in fact, this regulation was little applied and pitchers bearing gauging marks are very rare. The metric system appeared at the very beginning of the 19th century and took several decades to establish itself due to the resistance to change shown by users, but little by little these uniform cylindrical measures ended up replacing the jugs which presented, it is true, a variety of interesting shapes and characteristics of their place of manufacture, but also an infinite number of different gauges from one town to another and often even from one village to another, however close they were. This significantly complicated the exchanges...
