Merovingian Ceramic Goblet (6th–8th Century) – Provenance: Former French Collection

Merovingian Ceramic Drinking Cup (6th–8th Century) – Provenance: From an Old French Collection.

Exceptional Merovingian ceramic drinking cup, dated between the 6th and 8th centuries.

This beautiful example has a bipartite globular shape resting on a clearly defined ring foot, with a well-defined neck. The clay, a nuanced gray color, is characteristic of the productions of this period, with a rather porous texture.

This piece comes from an old French collection assembled at the beginning of the 20th century and is accompanied by its original label. This label, in the form of a business card from Mr. and Mrs. Choquet-Bo(.)lais, brickmakers in Beaurainville (Pas-de-Calais), reads: "Gallo-Roman pottery found while operating a brickyard in Beaurainville on July 25, 1925, with kind regards, Choquet."

It should be noted that this attribution is incorrect: it is indeed a Merovingian cup, and not Gallo-Roman. Misattributions are quite common in older collections.

This model is similar to a goblet discovered in June 1940 in the Somme region by the German soldier Curt Arpe (Wehrmacht), now housed at the Ribemont-sur-Ancre archaeological center.

Its state of preservation is remarkable, the ceramic being perfectly intact, which is exceptional for a piece of this age. An authentic and rare piece, ideal for an archaeology collector or lover of antique ceramics.
