18th Century Eastern French Faience Flower Holder, Probably Niderviller

18th Century Eastern French Faience Flower Holder, probably Niderviller

Height: 21 cm
Maximum width: 13.5 cm

Condition: minor chips and small glaze flakes consistent with age, no restoration.

A rare and charming 18th century faience flower holder (bouquetière) from Eastern France, most likely produced in Niderviller or a closely related Lorraine workshop.

The piece takes the elegant form of a Medici vase, raised on a molded foot and flanked by two gracefully scrolled rococo handles.

The body is decorated with a finely painted polychrome rose, accompanied by delicate foliage and small scattered floral motifs. The bright and lively palette — deep pink, nuanced greens, yellow and blue — is characteristic of Eastern French faience production from the second half of the 18th century.

The domed lid is pierced with multiple openings designed to hold individual flowers. Each aperture is surrounded by a polychrome relief ring, creating a series of small individual flower holders (soliflores) and giving the piece a particularly decorative appearance. The finial is shaped as a blooming flower, adding further charm and refinement.

Such pieces were used to display small arranged bouquets, a refined decorative feature in 18th century interiors.

Gallery’s note:

A highly decorative and relatively uncommon piece. The richly modeled pierced lid, the freshness of the floral decoration and the well-balanced proportions make this bouquetière especially appealing. It will sit equally well in a collection of antique faience or as a distinctive accent in a contemporary interior.
