Empire Period Portico Clock, Egyptian Revival Style, Armingaud, Hieroglyphs, Gilt Bronze
Artist: Armingaud L'aine
An important period portico clock style "Return from Egypt", displaying days 1 to 30 of the old French Republican calendar (1792-1805). The mechanism is by Armingaud the Elder, a clockmaker initially located on Rue Meslay and later on Boulevard de la Porte Saint-Martin in Paris (Tardy). It has a black marble base with a gilt bronze frieze decorated with putti in the Louis XVI style. The uprights are decorated with caryatids and incised with stylized hieroglyphs. The dial is flanked by cane-bearing griffins. The hammer and bell of the mechanism are missing; the movement needs servicing and the clock needs cleaning.
