Antique Fan, Louis XVI Period, Mother-of-pearl And Gouache On Leather
A Louis XVI period fan. The magnificent leaf is finely painted in gouache with various scenes on the theme of love. In the center, young people make offerings to a sculpture representing Venus. To the left, a couple embraces, while others dance or stroll. In the background, the sail of a ship can be seen. The reverse of the leaf is painted with three cartouches depicting gallant scenes and a seascape surrounded by garlands of flowers. The rich mount is made of engraved, bejeweled, and gilded mother-of-pearl, adorned with figures and putti. On the plumes are two glass-covered medallions with flowers and a bird in relief. It measures 10,82 inches closed and 20,86 inches in diameter when open. This rare fan is in very good condition. Europe, circa 1780.
