Gilt Bronze Ascetic Buddha. Southeast Asia. 19th Century Or Earlier.
Small bronze Buddha cast using the lost-wax method. He is seated in a meditative pose, with slender arms and prominent ribs; this is a representation of a fasting Buddha, which is quite rare. Traces of cold gilding, probably powdered over a thin layer of lacquer. The interior is filled with casting molten metal. The base is carved with stylized lotus petals, unusually arranged like tiles, a distinctive style that should allow a specialist to precisely date and locate the statuette. Beautiful casting, good finish, lovely antique patina, good condition, no repairs. The base is cracked at the back, but this does not detract from its aesthetic appeal. Height: 112 mm
