Very Large Hooked Corseque Known As "saquebute" 16th Century
The exact name of this weapon is SACKBUTE. It dates from the early 16th century. The length of the point is quite exceptional, as the points of sackbuts displayed in museums generally measure only about 30 centimeters. The example in the Charles Buttin collection (no. 370) measures only 48 cm in total, while this one measures 72 cm!
The sackbut, also called a "hook military fork" or "hook corseque," is a weapon used by infantry against cavalry. It appeared during the wars of the 15th century and took on its characteristic form around 1500.
The name sackbut comes from the Old French "saquer" (to pull towards oneself) and "bouter" (to strike with a point).
The central point is quadrangular, with a lozenge cross-section, and measures 57 cm. It is complemented by two lateral branches, also lozenge-shaped. One of the branches extends into a curved hook, which was used to unseat riders. The junction with the weapon's socket is at a flattened sphere 4 cm in diameter. The socket is conical, and the original rivet is still present.
This unusual weapon is rarely seen on the market. Its authenticity is undeniable, and the length of its point makes it exceptional. Of course, it is possible, and very easy, to reattach a wooden shaft to this iron to create a complete weapon.
