Oil on wood painted during the autumn of 1943 and located in the village of Guermeur in the commune of Guern, Morbihan (56) in Brittany, depicting the Saint Gilles chapel and the Calvary. Signed lower left G. Boucard for Georges Boucard*, a painter from Lorient who took refuge in Guern in 1943 for a few months following the bombing of the town in February 1943. Good original condition, original frame which is slightly warped.

Georges Boucard was born on October 23, 1895, in La Roche-sur-Yon, Vendée. Married to Simone Fontaine, he worked as a sign and decorative painter before dedicating himself to painting full-time. He was honorary president of the AC 14-18 and 39-45 painters' associations and a Knight of the Academic Palms. The city of Lorient owns a beautiful painting by this artist, depicting the Saint Louis church in Lorient after the fire caused by the bombings of 1943. Paintings by this discreet artist occasionally come up for auction.
