Karabakh Rug. South Caucasus. Circa 1880. 200 X 116 Cm
What elegance! In a perfectly mastered harmony of hues, this Karabakh rug originates from the Caucasus. Woven and knotted wool on wool in the traditional manner, the quality of the wool is absolutely remarkable, almost silky. The pile is short, a distinctive feature of antique Caucasian rugs. The motifs include stylized dragons, stars, various cruciform patterns, and amulets. Multiple borders feature floral motifs. The colors range from deep indigo blue and madder red to walnut, ivory, saffron yellow, and olive green. Of rare beauty, this piece can illuminate an entire space.
