Artifact – Antiquity – Yellow Pottery Wheel-handled Jug – Archaeology

Period: 2nd – 1st century BC. Origin: La Catalane Necropolis, Les Baux-de-Provence (Southern Gaul). Provenance: Brunet Collection (no. 64), acquired before 1973. Complete, wheel-thrown, yellow ceramic globular jug with a handle, from the funerary offerings of the protohistoric necropolis of La Catalane. This example corresponds to no. 61 in the inventory published in 1973 (fig. 31) and belongs to the series of local wheel-thrown ceramics associated with cremation deposits from the end of the Iron Age. The shape features a broad body, a tall cylindrical neck, and a thickened rim. The vertical, ribbon-like handle is grooved with two longitudinal furrows and ends in a slight depression where it joins the body of the vessel. The whole rests on a well-defined ring foot. Description: • Material: fairly hard clay; Clay and surface treatment identical to no. 58 in the catalogue. • Shape: globular jug with a cylindrical neck, thickened rim, handle with two longitudinal grooves and a terminal depression at the lower attachment point, ring foot. • Decoration: undecorated. • Surface: unglazed; homogeneous treatment consistent with local wheel-thrown production. • Technical traces: visible throwing, clear handle attachments, slight irregularities consistent with protohistoric southern artisanal production. Use: Jugs of this type accompanied urns in cremation burials. They could contain liquids related to the funerary ritual, illustrating the progressive integration of wheel-thrown forms into southern indigenous practices on the eve of Romanization. Condition: complete (mentioned as such in the publication). Reference: Revue archéologique de Narbonnaise, volume 6, 1973, inventory of the La Catalane necropolis, Baux-de-Provence, cat. 61 (fig. 31). Brunet Collection no. 64. Dimensions (data from the 1973 catalogue): • Height: 27.1 cm • Diameter at opening: 9.0 cm • Maximum diameter: 19.5 cm • Diameter of base: 8.8 cm ALL DELIVERIES ARE MADE BY DHL EXPRESS ONLY.
