18th Century Snuffbox, Cage Mount In Solid Silver, Mother-of-pearl And Coral Composition.
Magnificent and very rare 18th-century snuffbox.
The box is mounted in a solid silver cage, inset with mother-of-pearl marquetry panels separated by a magnificent and extremely rare coral-colored crosshatching design.
Each crosshatching is centered with a very delicate nail, itself decorated with a tiny frieze of silver beads.
All sides are adorned with this magnificent and precious decoration. The interior of the box is gilt silver, and the rim is scalloped.
The box is hallmarked:
Partially legible discharge mark: probably a salmon head used in Paris between 1744 and 1750.
Later French hallmark, also found on some second-hand pieces.
